Mexico fail to make it eight in a row as Uganda win first women’s title
Under the thunder clouds in Oslo, Mexico’s women had the chance to make it eight Homeless World Cups in a row, after winning the title in Seoul, Sacramento, Cardiff, Mexico City, Oslo, Glasgow and Amsterdam.
The first chances fell to Mexico, sending a shot wide before the Uganda keeper made a fine block. Soon Uganda took the lead, blasting home from a neat lay off on the left wing. Uganda sought to extend their lead, with Mexico’s keeper producing a fantastic double save to prevent them from doing so. Uganda’s keeper was then called into action, saving well off a firm strike, before Uganda burst up the park to score their second with a sweet right-foot strike.
Uganda then missed the chance to score their third moments later, sending a shot wide, before Uganda’s keeper produced another fine save from close range. Then Uganda got their third, with a fine strike from distance whistling by the Mexico keeper into the net.
Into the second-half, Mexico probed for a chance to get on the scoresheet but were met by a determined Uganda keeper. First she saved off the line and then produced a fantastic save with her legs. Mexico then passed up the chance to score from the penalty spot as the Uganda keeper spread herself well. Soon Uganda had their fourth, with the ball falling kindly to a Uganda player to slot home from close range, before they got their fifth moments later. Uganda then sought to limit Mexico, producing some fine passing and possession play. As the clock wound down, they got their sixth with a powerful right foot shot into the top corner.
