Finland in funland with victory over Spain

Finland traveled to near neighbours Norway for the Oslo 2025 Homeless World Cup with some history on their side, winning the Tier 6 trophy in 2012 and finishing second in the Tier 3 stage in 2006.

On Day 2 at Rådhusplassen Square in the heart of Norway's capital city, they raised hopes for similar success this time out, producing a superb performance to see off Spain 5-0. If it weren’t for some fantastic stops by Spain’s goalkeeper, Finland could have ended up with double figures.

Finland took an early lead via a strong shot from the left wing, before a right footed strike from a quick counter attack saw them double their lead. Spain’s first attack was quickly snuffed out by some strong Finnish defending, before Spain’s keeper denied Finland going 3-0 up. Finland then struck a penalty off the bar before a great save from point-blank range by Spain’s keeper saw Finland go into the break 2-0 in front. Into the second half, Finland’s keeper was called into action for the first time, saving a penalty with his midriff to prevent Spain getting on the scoresheet. From there, Finland soon found themselves 4-0 up thanks to some quick thinking to capitalise on a rebound and a great piece of individual dribbling skill. A further Spain attack was snuffed out before a run and side foot finish saw Finland secure their fifth goal of the game near the end.

Finland Team Manager Teppo Valtanen said:

“It was a fun game. We had fun and we did our own things well. The Spain goalkeeper made some good saves. Oslo has been really fun. Yesterday was really exciting with all the other countries arriving and everyone singing. It was really enjoyable.”
