Fair play and friendliness wins FIFPRO Award for the Dutch

“This is the most important medal we could win here.”

That was the Dutch team’s response to winning the second FIFPRO Fair Play Award of the tournament.

The referees noted their good spirit, friendliness towards referees and their opponents, and good energy all round.

This is noticeable in all the team’s games, including day two’s match-up against Mexico. In awe of the football skills of the reigning champions, the Dutch men and women bravely took to the pitch. Although the Mexicans were too strong to beat, the mixed team in orange gave it their all and managed to score five goals.

In the true spirit of fair play, both teams hugged, shook hands and complimented each other on their efforts.

Fair play is an important part of the local street soccer leagues that the Dutch team members play in year-round. Dutch player Maikel de Groot explains: “This is the prize that matters.”

“I also think the Mexicans showed fair play to us. You notice the spirit of fair play because even after two days, you can befriend other teams. This is what it is all about.”
