‘Calma, raga’ the key as Italy do their talking on the pitch against Japan
Communication was key for Italy as they put on an accomplished display in a 6-1 victory over Japan on Day 2 of the Oslo 2025 Homeless World Cup.
Cajoled by constant cries of enthusiasm and direction from their goalkeeper, Italy got off the mark quickly via a fine volleyed finish, before a long distance strike saw them go two in front. A quick break then raced the Azzuri into a three goal lead, before a left foot shot evaded the keeper to make it four.
Shouts of ‘Calma, raga!’ (‘Calm, guys!’) rang out across the pitch as Italy’s man between the sticks encouraged his side to maintain possession and limit Japan’s chances. Soon Italy were 5-0 up via a fine finish before Japan’s keeper made a fine penalty save. His counterpart was called into action twice, producing a great diving save from a shot from distance before stopping a penalty.
Japan found the net moments into the second half off a quick break to cheers among their fans in the stands, before forcing Italy’s keeper into another smart save, but a quick break from the Italians saw them regain their five-goal advantage. Japan almost produced one of the goals of the tournament with a header off a headed assist going over the bar before Italy’s keeper produced the save of the game to parry a powerful shot at the death.
Italy coach Mirko Bigatton said:
“It was a good match and the players were respectful of the other team. We have a lot of guys on our team who didn’t play much football so for them it is a great experience. I try to encourage them on the pitch to do their best. For us communication on the pitch is very important. We encourage the players to speak with each other on the pitch. The experience so far has been beautiful and we are doing our best.”
