Austrians impress against Ireland on day one

An impressive Austria saw off a spirited Ireland as both Women’s teams got their participation underway on day one at the Oslo 2025 Homeless World Cup.

Austria ran out 7-1 winners, with six of their goals coming in the first-half. Ireland’s goalkeeper was called into action almost from the get-go, pulling off a number of impressive point-blank saves, before a penalty saw Austria take a deserved lead. In a flash, Austria were two goals to the good after a left-foot shot passed through the goalkeeper’s legs. Soon it was 3-0 for Austria with a shot from the edge of the box before a fantastic shot from distance saw them go 5-0 up following the fourth.

The girls in green eventually got off the mark off the back of a great passing move, before Austria restored their five-goal advantage and then made it 6-1 with a sizzling shot from near the halfway line that went in off the post before half-time.

But Irish spirit meant the second half was much closer. Both teams enjoyed spells of passing and possession, with chances not as forthcoming as they were in the first-half. Austria hit the bar before Ireland’s keeper pulled off a fabulous save with their knees. A counter-attack by Austria then saw them extend their lead to 7-1, which they held onto until the final whistle.

Austria coach Jasmin Pistotnik said:

“For our first match, it was a very good match. We scored seven goals so it was a nice game for us. It was difficult for us but I think in the next games it will be better and better. The players are very excited to be here. It’s nice to be in Oslo. We hope it’s a good tournament for us.”
