Greece goalkeeper Styliani Mavridou has picked up the second FIFPro award for fair play.
Nicknamed “Stella,” the goalkeeper became a fans’ favourite in their match against Argentina on Monday, when she celebrated after picking the ball up much to the crowd’s delight.
The video – which has been viewed 30,000 times – has been shared by many on social media, including governing body UEFA and former England goalkeeper David James.
Stella accepted her award this afternoon from former Hibs footballer Jackie McNamara Snr.
Speaking after picking up the honour, she said: “It’s an unbelievable feeling. I can’t believe this is happening, I can’t believe this is real. It’s very emotional but I’m trying to keep it together so I am focused on the next matches. I’d like to dedicate the award to the Greek street newspaper and to my son and grandchild too.”
Jackie McNamara Snr added: “It’s lovely to be back in my native city and see so many nationalities enjoying themselves and changing their lives. It’s been great to see two of the women’s sides come out as winners of the FIFPro award these past two days also.”
