Reminiscing Referees
Posted on 12/09/2009
There aren't many people who can say they have been to just about all the Homeless World Cups, but Gerhard Holzmann and Reinhard Raminger from Austria have been there since the beginning as referees. Why do they continue to volunteer annually? Because they realise the importance of helping others that need help. Here they share their memories of their experiences over the years.
2003 - Graz, Austria. Reinhard was in charge of finiding referees which was particularly tough as it was a new idea, and referees expected to be paid. Reinhard then called on his friend Gerhard to help. The Homeless World Cup started off relatively small with 24 teams over 2 pitches, so despite the shortage of referees, they managed and loved the idea.
2004 - Gothenberg, Sweden. Despite Reinhard and Gerhard enjoying their experiences, they didn't attend this World Cup as the organisation wanted to use only local referees.
2005 - Edinburgh, Scotland. Whilst Reinhard used his annual leave to go on holidays, Gerhard soaked up the atmosphere and enjoyed watching the spectator from all over the UK barrack for their teams. In particular, Gerhard remembers refereeing the match between England and Scotland, which was repeated again today. He also had the opportunity to referee the finals, another memorable moment.
2006 - Cape Town, South Africa. During this tournament, they acutely remember the SOuth African referees joining the ranks. Abudu and Shoes left a big impact on the Austrians hearts and are grateful that they have continued to volunteer in3 the following years.
2007 - Copenhagen, Denmark. This Cup stands out as the social highlight between all the referees. Michael Kofoed joined the ranks, and Kym Milton, a FIFA World Cup referee also pitched in.
2008 - Melbourne, Australia. Melbourne will be forever remembered as the most organised Cup. It was the biggest tournament with 56 teams participating and there were a lot of spectators. Gerhard remembers the beautiful city of Melbourne with lots of things to see and do.
2009 - Milano, Italy. They have enjoyed these games just like the previous games, and think the venue is great, but wish that it took place in a venue more central where people would pass. They have had an opportunity to mix with the players on and off the court, and they feel appreciated by everyone.
2010 - Rio De Jeneiro. See you there!
