The first day of the Homeless World Cup by all public admissions has been an overwhelming success.
As the male and female players wooed audiences, public support was unprecedented, the diverse and vibrant crowd were captivated by this unique and special event. Although many matches have been played in the opening rounds of this tournament, Russia Vs Ghana, was one of the favourite matches displaying quality football with Russia eventually pipping Ghana 8-7. The Danish reserve team stood in for the Burundi side today, as Burundi are expected to start their World Cup campaign tomorrow, unfortunately playing catch up as they lost 3-0 to Slovakia. Although Poland beat Germany 6-2 Germany displayed resilience and determination to the bitter end.
The spirit remained alive even through torrential rain, in fact the inconsistent weather only served to build character, the packed stands never flagged, enhancing the competitive vibe and sweetness of victory. The homeless and the local crowds displayed unity as national teams battled for success, displaying all the qualities of true stars. Moreover local danish homeless, who were not involved with the cup but appeared from the woodwork and showed an affiliation to the games. So far games have provided a sense of hope and distraction from the daily difficulties of life. Today social inclusion has reined triumphant.
