Memorable Moments

Posted on 13/09/2009

As the Homeless World Cup is drawing to a close, players are reminiscing about this event.  On the one hand, they are happy to go home and eat their native food and sleep in a familar environment. On the other hand, they are sad to leave all their new friends and the friendly environment.  Here are a few memorable moments from the Teams:

Muda from Ghana:  'Most memorable moment was playing Mexico the second time. The first time, we lost 10-5, but the second time we played them, we beat them 4-2 in the semi finals.  It was a great feeling.'

Julian from Netherlands: 'It is difficult to say what the memorable moment was because everything was memorable.  The first game against Scotland was the most memorable because it was new.'

Jose from USA: 'When the USA played against Costa Rica which is my home country.  I had mixed emotions, but I still wanted USA to win.'

Henry from Portugal: 'I will remember the miracle of the human spirit.  How teams have overcome obstacles to be here.  How the players overcame any personal difficutlies with accommodation and have moved forward.  The service that the volunteers provided.  This is the miracle of the human spirit.'

Kristof from Belgium: 'When we first started playing in the tournament, our team had a hard time accepting how hard the standard was, and how physical the game was.  But then there was a transformation on the 3rd or 4th day where the team came together and stopped arguing and played football.'

Dexter from USA: 'Beating France in the last game of first round 5-4 so we ended up qualifying in the top half.  We have a French gy in our team, so it was particularly emotional for him.  Also, getting lost in the maze of Venice on our team outing.'

Julier from Switzerland: 'During the match against Italy, in the first half we were not playing very well and were shouting at each other.  At half time, we decided to forget about any problems and concentrate on the football.    It was a revolution within the team, and we scored 5 goals in that half.  We didn't end up winning, but the memroable moment was how the team united.'
