Goal's Galore for Ghana

Posted on 14/12/2007

A donation from The Funding Network of £10,000 ensured Ghana's participation in the Copenhagen 2007 Homeless World Cup. Si Mobey catches up with two players from the Ghana team grateful for the opportunity and experience which has changed their lives and those of their team mates.

EugeneEugene Boye Lomotey became homeless and involved in drugs through unemployment, but since his involvement with the Homeless World Cup his life has changed considerably.  He has demonstrated strong courage becoming free from drugs and following his experience in Copenhagen he went on to find employment as a teacher, and with his salary is able to rent a room and is no longer homeless. Eugene plans to continue his education supported by his new job.

He feels extremely grateful to the organisations who he feels made it possible: “I wish to thank all the people who made a donation and supported the Ghana team. I wish them every success, God bless you all.”

Since his Homeless World Cup debut Alexander Annan has assured both the Ghanaian goal and his family are in safe hands. Alex became homeless after being made redundant and was no longer able to support his family. He now works full time as an electrical technician using his salary to provide permanent accommodation for his family and to cover the costs of their education and expenses.  He also lends his considerable goalkeeping expertise to several of Ghana’s fledgling homeless teams as a coach.

Sarah Kuehne, Co-ordinator, The Funding Network said: "The Homeless World Cup pitched for £5,000 at The Funding Network's (TFN) event hosted by Coutts & Co in June 2007. However, following their 6 minute presentation, donors generously pledged a total of £10,000 towards the project. The impact of the funds raised was immediate, as the next day TFN was informed that funds raised would be used to ensure Ghana participated in the Copenhagen 2007 Homeless World Cup and how excited the team was! It is fantastic to see how well the players have all done.

"On behalf of TFN and all those who supported the project, we would like to wish the Homeless World Cup continued success in changing lives and have fun in the process!"
