Fundraising Success

Posted on 01/10/2007

All around the world dedicated individuals have been fundraising for the Homeless World Cup. Here a number of them report back on their experiences and inspire you to get fundraising to support the mission of involving 100,000 players in the Homeless World Cup by 2010.

Greece: A marathon victory raises 1000 euros

The Galera Extreme Team in Greece challenged themselves to beat the difficult, mountainous course of the Alonissos Marathon. Gabi Naegele, Nick Valatsos, Yiannis Apostolakos and Chris Alefantis were victorious in reaching the finishing line and raising over 1,000 euros for the Homeless World Cup to take 10 teams from economically poorer nations to Copenhagen.

Gabi Naegele finished 1st in the women’s category in 3:54:04, Yiannis Apostolakos walked the whole course exhibiting all the qualities of a person determined to do his bit for the Homeless World Cup in 8 hours and 30 minutes, forcing the event organizers to come up with a special –out of the official program- prize. Nick Valatsos crossed the finishing line after 4:39:44 in the 14th position and Chris Alefantis managed to finish 11th overall after 4:38:36. The post-marathon soreness felt by all runners was effectively treated with a good swim in the crystal clear waters of the Aegean and the feast that followed at Kyra Katinas taverna in Steni Vala.
A big thanks to all our friends and supporters who were so quick to respond to our Alonissos adventure for the Cup.

Edinburgh: Benefit gig raises £700

Husseys Gig to raise money for the Homeless World CupNick Marks superbly pulled off the first in a series of six benefit gigs he has planned to raise funds for the Homeless World Cup.  The gig attracted more than 100 people to see an eclectic mix of Scotland's finest up and coming bands, who all donated their appearance to the cause: The Hussy’s, Blind Summit and Atlantic. Great reviews in the Edinburgh Evening News noted the awesome spirit and atmosphere on the night.  The next event is scheduled for the Cabaret Voltaire on 2nd November 2007. Join us.

Edinburgh: Sky dive raises £1,500

On 30th September a group of three friends embarked on a sky dive to raise money for the Homeless World Cup and all returned! The group included the Homeless World Cup's own Becca McInally: "After a terrifying day of waiting and watching others, we ascended in a tiny 4 seater plane to 10,000ft and prepared to jump. Following a liberating 5000ft freefall reaching 180mph in 20seconds, we deployed the parachute and glided down for the final 5000ft. I was lucky enough to jump as the sun was setting on a beautifully clear evening and was able to see from the River Tay to the Firth of Forth and even had a glimpse of the Forth Rail Bridge."
