The Big Issue in the North, organisers of England’s Homeless World Cup team have founded a new football league in Liverpool as the expansion of their activities looks to widen the benefits and opportunities for people who are homeless in England.
The ‘Liverpool Homeless Football Club’ and it’s new league structure will begin this month uniting many of the agencies and hostels that support the city’s homeless population. It will feature 14 teams of homeless players competing in 5-a-side games throughout the year. The two tier competition will feature representative teams from many different organisations, including the Salvation Army Housing Association, Bosco House and Homeground.
Players recieved 100 pairs of brand new football boots, from Homeless World Cup international partner, Nike, to assure the league gets off to a smart start.
Newly booted players will have the opportunity to trial out to represent their country at the Melbourne 2008 Homeless World Cup, explained Richard Brown from The Big Issue in the North: “We have been organising the England team for the Homeless World Cup tournament for five years now and the Liverpool League is a step up for us, meaning we can work with even more homeless people in the area, using football as a way to help them regain their self-esteem and confidence and giving them fresh motivation to move on in their lives.”
