First Lady of Mexico Speaks Out

The first lady of Mexico, Margarita Zabala, has championed the efforts of Mexico’s National Homeless World Cup Team at the 8th Rio 2010 Homeless World Cup, 19 – 26 September 2010.

Addressing the team at a special ceremony at her official residence in Los Pinos, she spoke of the importance of representing your country and the benefits of participating in sport and urged the team to do their best to return with the Homeless World Cup Trophy. They could rely on the full backing of the Mexican public.

You can read the transcripts in English, Portuguese and Spanish here:

MARGARITA ZABALA, the First Lady of Mexico:

One of the biggest privileges you will have in your lives is to represent Mexico. Even those who will go there to support the team, to cheer them on, all of you also represent Mexico. Every Mexican who goes out is a representative of our nation. And those of you who are champions will also go there to support your team.

All of you know the importance of feeling at home (even if you are not at home!). But feel support from your home. And for those of you are going to support the team, also know that you represent a football nation, which would like nothing more than to see their team win.

We never stop telling you to play sports, don’t take drugs, study, work. That is what your parents tell you, what we say, and what will keep on saying. But in the end, you are the one who decides. The adults are under obligation to advise you on all the options in order for you to choose from the best alternatives, the best options. But in this hostile world, you have to know how to be happy...
