Solidarity and friendship was the theme of one of the friendliest matches of the Homeless World Cup tournament: Greece V Australia.
I am an Australian mother of four football mad children and a the wife of a man who coaches a collection of twenty-somethings who don't care as much as he does. He also coaches 10 year old girls who are unbeaten in an U11 league in Melbourne, but they do drive him mad when they hold 'mother's meetings' in the middle of the pitch and the defenders do each other's hair in particularly one-sided games. I manage an U15 boys team and in my spare time I volunteer with and support the Australian team, the Street Socceroos. George Halkias, their Coach, and I take the Street Socceroos into schools to teach young people Street Soccer and to talk to them about social justice issues such as homelessness, substance abuse, mental illness, refugees - in fact players in the program represent just about every social problem Australia faces today. I have travelled to Copenhagen to support the Street Socceroos and to experience the energy and excitement of the 2007 Homeless World Cup. I am a football evangelist who honestly believes that people can improve their lives through football. I will be meeting and reporting on people here in Copenhagen who are living examples of this.
