Joy Human Development Centre

Joy Human Development Trust was founded after brothers James, John and Morgan Chibuye took part in a skills development programme in Lusaka in 1998. The project was organised and funded by Traidcraft and aimed to impart sustainable income generating knowledge to its participants. They received expert tuition from local and international craftspeople in the art of wood carving and papermaking.
All workshop participants were encouraged to establish their own NGO following the completion of their training in order to share the knowledge they had acquired. Thus JHD was set up to pass on these vital income generating skills to vulnerable communities.
Since it’s beginning in 2003 JHD has worked with many local and international organisations. They offer placements for international volunteers and have received training in many different crafts including tie-dye and batik, . They run education programmes, sporting events, and many art and craft workshops and projects, empowering some of the most vulnerable people in Lusaka.
JHD work in close partnership with the Zambia Youth Academy to give young people a sense of purpose in their lives. Many of Zambia’s youth are struggling to find employment and have few positive influences in their lives. Sports activities help them to keep fit, give them a healthy programme of activities and encourage commitment and dedication to a team. The Zambia Youth Academy football team recently represented their country in the Homeless World Cup in Cape Town where they played brilliantly to win the much deserved award of the City of Cape Town Cup. They have also recently participated in the Homeless World Cup Copenhagen 2007 where they gained the world ranking of 19 out of 48 nations.
