Alexey Grekov is in the “classic” situation of homelessness in Russia. Being very good engineer, he doesn’t have any job prospects in his native small town not far from the Ural mountains. Being an “illegal” inhabitant of Saint-Petersburg, he has all problems connected with this strange status. But he has trained with Russian homeless team since 2004. And he hopes that his debut as a national team player in Copenhagen will be successful and spur him on to new chances as with his fellow team mates before him.

Slava Shelaevsky left his small village in the north of Russia in the beginning of 2005 and came to Saint-Petersburg looking for better life. He didn’t have a registration in the city so he had no right to an official and fair paid job. Without a job he had no chance to pay for accommodation. The Police arrested him as an illegal inhabitant of the city, and he had to pay the police and became a participant in the greatest corruption. Problem followed problem. And maybe it was impossible to break on through these problems being alone.

Russia is proving that they will be tough contenders for the Copenhagen 2007 Homeless World Cup. Latest photos just in show the team training in thick snow. Nothing will deter them from achieving their goals, their journey to another victory. Will any other nation be able to top that determination?

At its street paper project and night shelter "Put domoj" works with a small percentage of the estimated 45, 000 homeless people in St. Petersburg. Homelessness in Russia arises due to people losing homes from real estate speculations, alcohol abuse or they are driven into illegality by the "propiska" system, a Soviet law that allows the state to deprive people of almost all civic rights if they are not officially registered in their city of residence.
