Introducing Portugal's Ana

Posted by Portugal - 04/07/2007

Ana Ferreira is a 16 year old female, Portuguese (from Aveiro) player. With a poor education characterised by truancy she has experienced emotional and family issues having been homeless since early childhood.

Ana doesn't have a place she can call a home. She lives with her mother under poor conditions, in a farming area, where she's working in a grape harvest. The place where she sleeps is a farming out building where her boss keeps the wine production, the cereals as well all the agricultural material. She currently suffers from poverty and social exclusion problems. Working in temporary jobs with very low wages she experiences some emmotional and mental health problems. Her father suffers from drug addiction and trafficing. He has been under arrest for some years. Despite all this, Ana is very motivated and is ready to fight against her social problems and to change her life. Ana’s words about the Portuguese Streetsoccer Project and eventual participation in the Copenhagen 2007 Homeless World Cup are: "This is the first time I have played football in an official competition. The fair play was great during the national event. The Homeless World Cup is a chance to get away from the troubles of day-to-day life and to begin to work to changing my life for the better.”
