Wellington Street Football Mini Tournament
Posted by New Zealand - 31/08/2008
On Thursday 28th August Street Football Aotearoa and SportZone hosted a mini football tournament at the Wesley Church Hall as part of our preparations for the Homeless World Cup…
Wellington Street Football’s usual players and volunteers were joined by guests and supporters. Thanks to the Lifewise Centre for supporting Steve McLuckie from Auckland to join us for the event and to Downtown Community Ministry, Sisters of Compassion, and Wellington City Council for their continued support of the football project.
Sixteen players competed in a round-robin of fast and furious 4 a-side 10 minute games. The teams represented players from: • Wellington Street Football • Wellington Homeless Agencies • Street Football Volunteers • Wellington City Council
The standard of fitness and commitment was high with games played in a good spirit of fun and enjoyment. The Wellington City Council team came out winners of the round-robin but a tight and exciting play off between the top two teams saw Wellington Homeless Agencies walk away with the trophy due to some inspired goalkeeping from Desmond Ang of the Compassion Centre.
Grateful thanks to our sponsors Wellington City Council, Felix Café for supplying refreshments, the Wesley Wellington Parish, Tony and Terry from SportZone for setting up the hall and refereeing the games and of course to all the players who came out for the afternoon to support the HWC preparations.
