The Big Issue Namibia organises the street soccer programme engaging people who are homeless and excluded culminating in the change to attend the Homeless World Cup. We thought you might like to know a bit about us.

Established in 2002, The Big Issue is a non-profit job creation initiative that publishes a general interest magazine that is sold by a vendor force of unemployed, homeless and socially excluded adults. This is backed up by a social development programme of vendor support, vocational, life and business skills training and counselling.

2 street soccer tournaments are scheduled for April and October 2008 respectively and will be staged in Windhoek and Ondangwa in the north of the country. 10 media organizations will take part and a total of 80 players will be involved in all tournaments. These tournaments will also act as fundraising platform for us and eventuall 8 players will be selected for the Melbourne 2008 Homeless World Cup.

The Big Issue team will start training by the 27th February for 2 days per week to make sure we are great at this tournament.

The Big Issue Namibia is a member of the International Network of Streetpapers (INSP), which unites over 80 Streetpapers sold by people living in poverty all over the world. Members are active in 30 countries and collectively harness a readership of 30 million. The core philosophy of the INSP is that all profits from street paper sales and advertising should be used to provide social support for poor, destitute and unemployed people.
