MEXICO UNITES FOR CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS

The finals of the Street Soccer Mexico National Championship took place this week drawing players from across the country.

Held in Mexico City from 19-21 July the final competition saw more than 450 players participating, representing 56 men and women’s teams from every region of Mexico.

The regional sides from ’Coahuila’ and ‘Quintana Roo’ won the men and women’s competitions respectively. These will be the players to represent Mexico at the Paris 2011 Homeless World Cup and Women’s Homeless World Cup next month.

Carlos Slim, President of telecommunications giant Telmex was present at the event to support the teams and congratulate the winners. His company are the main sponsors of Street Soccer Mexico.

He said: “Anything that gives an incentive for young people to be involved in sporting activity is fantastic, and we are proud to support this.”

Arturo Elias Ayub, General Director of Fundacion Telmex said: “This national tournament is for homeless young people who have given themselves the chance to change their lives through football.

“After participating in this tournament they can begin to look for work, enjoy a healthier life and build a better future.”

The Paris 2011 Homeless World Cup takes place at the Champs de Mars, Paris, France from 21-28 August 2011.
