Kicking off poverty

Posted by Kenya - 02/03/2007

The players with the Kenyan team all come from the Hurama Cranes Street Soccer Team, a side created to help youths in the slum areas of Mathare and Huruma.

The slum areas have one of the highest numbers of street children and AIDS orphans in Kenya. 60% of the slum residents earn less than 1$ per day. Street Soccer has become one the main avenues for escape from the cycle of crime and homelessness that scars the slum areas. Over 600 players are now involved in street soccer projects and many have gone on to sign professional contracts with Kenyan league sides. The players in the Homeless World Cup team all have experience of homelessness and poverty. Since joining the side many have given up drugs and crime and some have found temporary accommodation.

I would love to be included in this program as am learning soccer teams of under 16. We include estate and slums along Outering Road. Namely, Pipeline, Donholm, Umoja, BuruBuru, Kariobangi, Outering, Pioneer, Kiambio. In this group am dealing with slums children and from other estates around this community. Let me know how I can be involved in fighting different ills and poverty among youth at a tender age so as they grow upright people with direction.
