Irish Team seeking Glory at Homeless World Cup

Posted by Ireland - 16/07/2007

The team has been picked, now it’s on to Copenhagen where Ireland will pit their skills against the best in the world at the Homeless World Cup!

It's been a year of hard work and dedication but shortly it will be all worth while for eight lads who will represent Ireland in the 2007 Homeless World Cup in Copenhagen 29 July - 4 August.

48 countries will take part from all over the world including Argentina, England, Germany, Kenya, Australia and Afghanistan.

For our lads, it is a dream come through. It is true to say that the lads representing us this year have earned their place in the team having overcome adversity in their own lives and dedicated themselves over the past 12 months to getting themselves to the fitness level required for this unique event by participating in Ireland’s Issues Street Leagues. Suffice to say none of this would have been possible without the help of the many people who have supported our leagues and Homeless World Cup. Thanks to this help and that of Dublin City council, FAI and our commercial sponsor Start Mortgages we are able to make this trip, continue our League program and will be in a position shortly to appoint a development officer to oversee the expansion of the Street League so as many people as possible from all over the country will reap the benefits of rebuilding their lives through the medium of sport.

The players representing Ireland this year are;

David Doyle aged 24 from Clondalkin, plays for the Casp (Clondalkin addiction support) Team in the Street league. His favourite player is Roy Keane and like the Cork man displays a steely resolve reminiscent of the great one.

Ian Fitzgerald at 18 is the youngest player on the team he hails from Basin Lane and is a member of the Crosscare Street league team his favourite team is Liverpool.

Gary Quigley 21 from Ballymun, Gary is also a member of the Crosscare team and is you guessed it a Man U supporter.

Jason Cosgrove Goalkeeper at 32 is the oldest member of the team he plays with the Soilse team, like his favourite player Shay Given, he is an excellent goalkeeper and will I’m sure keep up the great tradition of Irish keepers in World Cup tournaments. It’s been a good year for Jason and he is embarking on a Sports coaching course in Sept.

Roy Marshall 23 represents Simon rehab in Street league, Roy is from Dublin central and is yet another Man U supporter.

James Higgins 21 From Cork represents Coolmine in the Street league. Similar to his team mate Jason, James is doing a sports coaching course/fitness instructor with Fas.

Trevor Curtis 26 an Arsenal Supporter his silky skills and calm influence is modeled on his favourite player Therry Henry. Also a member of the Soilse Street League team.

Bernard McEvoy 26 A member of the Casp Street League team and yet another Roy Keane fan whose play typifies the never say die spirit of the great man.

The support team consists of Anthony Hill and Chris Fitzpatrick (Social Coaches), Mick Pender (Chief Coach) and Sean Kavanagh (Manager)

Now it’s on to the Homeless World Cup 2007!
