Posted by Hong Kong - 30/05/2007

To raise the money for the Hong Kong Homeless World Cup team to participate in the Homeless World Cup and to promote the message of social inclusion and poverty elimination, The Society for Community Organization, and Wofoo Social Enterprise co-organized an event, 'Kick Off Poverty – Homeless World Cup Fundraising Tournament 2007' in Mapherson Playground, Mong Kok, on 26-27 May 2007.

It was a 4-a-side tournament and successfully attracted 20 teams to participate and 10 teams came from local business and companies. They not only donated a lot of money, but also played the games. Other teams came from the non-governmental agencies and the local homeless football team. Some of the teams were formed by asylum seekers or ethnic minority too. Each teams played 4 preliminary games and 2 knock-out games in 2 days.

Two friendly matches were also arranged. One was the match between the legislative councilors and the local homeless football teams, and another one was performed by 2 professional football teams.

On the whole, the event was a success and Hong Kong are hoping to improve on last years Homeless World Cup ranking!

The effort made by SoCo, the organization which contributes immensely in organizing the Hong Kong team throughout, should be acknowledged. "Homeless FC," a documentary depicting the 7 Hong Kong footballers who had participated in the Homeless World Cup in Cape Town, was shown last Saturday. Encouraging and touching as it is, significant changes are revealed in those footballers after the tournament. I sincerely hope that people will continue to support the Hong Kong football team, and pay more attention to the marginalized and the homeless in the world.
