Inspired by the Homeless World Cup, a group of enthusiastic people, keenly supported by Galera Magazine (a publication focusing on social issues), joined the ranks of Greek people who are committed to the global fight against homelessness and social exclusion and are now at the head of the project.

Organisation - DIOGENES NGO

The Greek "Kick out Poverty" campaign was launched in 2007, inspired by the Homeless World Cup. The project is based in Athens. Since 2010, however, it has spread to other parts of Greece. The Greek Homeless Team first joined the Homeless World Cup in the Copenhagen tournament of 2007. In 2011, the first national football tournament 'Against Poverty and Social Exclusion' was held in the city of Patra, involving teams from eight different Greek cities. Diogenes NGO is the name of the organization, coordinating the football project as well as all other activities, organized in the context of the ‘Kick Out Poverty’ campaign. It took its name after Diogenes of Sinope, the Ancient Greek philosopher who was said to be homeless ( 412 - 323 BC). Film festivals, art exhibitions, theatre plays, music concerts, football tournaments and many other sporting as well as cultural activities are all part of the campaign’s annual calendar, as it actively pursues the social inclusion for all in a country that is in danger of social disintegration, due to the enormous economic difficulties it is faced with. Firmly feeling as part of an international movement (and not just of an international football tournament), since 2007 (that is, since the inception of the program) members and friends of the Greek “Kick Out Poverty” campaign, have been running the Athens Classic Marathon, in order to raise funds for the Homeless World Cup Foundation. United, we can.
