The wonderful people at the Funding Network have kindly pledged their support to this years Ghanaian Homeless World Cup Team to help make the teams dream a reality and support their attendance at the Homeless World Cup Copenhagen.
The team have gratefully responded with the following letter;
Dear people at the Funding Network,
We thank you very much for supporting our project and making the participation of the Ghana Street Soccer National Team at the Homeless World Cup 2007 in Denmark a reality.
Our participation in the Homeless World Cup in Cape Town 2006 has already highlighted the social situation of our players and more people are now trying to help solve the problem, it also helped the players to regain their lost dignity as part of society and most of them are now changed people especially those who were into drugs and alcohol.
Homelessness has become one of the major social problems facing most countries in the world. The problem of homelessness in Ghana is even worse than one would have thought of. Every day about 500 youth and children move from rural Ghana to the urban cities in search of greener pastures or better life. Unfortunately the aspirations of these young boys and girls are not met. Eventually these unfortunate ones end up on the streets without food, clothing, shelter or education. These problems eventually lead the children into child labor, prostitution, drugs and armed robbery. The situation has become even worse with the increasing population without equal employment creation. Theses child grow up to become adults without future and any hope. They end up making their home and livelihood on the streets for the rest of their life and becoming a problem to society.
Gimat volunteer Network an NGO in Ghana has noticed these problems and their social and economic effects on the national economy and would like to come out with a mouth piece that would serve as an advocate to bring into light some of the causes and effects of the homelessness and possible solutions to them.
Ghana's participation in the Copenhagen 2007 is going to give the players a new focus in life and would also help people who in their life time could not get the opportunity to travel by plane and meet people from various walks of lives do so.
We thank you so much for making such a dream come through for the players.
