Coming soon: "The Brazilian Street Soccer League"

Posted by Brazil - 02/05/2007

The non-profit enterprise OCAS - Organização Civil de Ação Social (Civil Organization for Social Action, in English words), has been coordinating the Brazilian street soccer team for the last three editions of the Homeless World Cup. The organization publishes a magazine called Ocas, sold exclusively by people living in poverty or under a social risk situation, who have in this job the chance of effectively changing their lives.

For the next years OCAS plans to create the Brazilian League of Street Soccer, which will gather dozens of organizations and thousands of people in a situation of social risk from all over the country. One of its outcomes might be the happening of the Homeless World Cup in Brazil in 2010.

The participation of Ocas as the Brazilian representative in the Homeless World Cup appeared naturally because of the fact that the tournament has been idealized and organized initially by the INSP, the International Network of Street Papers, which Ocas magazine is a member since july 2002, when it was launched.

The results and the impacts of the pilot tournament of 2003 led to the decision of making the Homeless World Cup an annual tournament, in a process that has placed the street soccer and the Homeless World Cup in the world’s sports agenda.

It is natural that the tournament has become a first class sport event. The friendly character of the matches is still the same. However, its notable the way that many teams have been preparing themselves and providing, year after year, games of high quality technique, that surprise many spectators, who, inadvertently wait for grotesque and hilarious passes.

It is in this context that Ocas comes idealizing, after three modest participations, the Brazilian League of Street Soccer, in a way to involve and benefit the biggest possible number of people, and to promote the concept of street soccer in Brazil, bringing the brightness and the quality of the Brazilian soccer to the international arena.
