2007 brought good and bad news for Belgian soccer fans. The bad news was that the Belgian national team lost its qualification for EURO 2008. The good news was that a small group of Antwerp social workers decided that it was time to finally form a Belgian team that would participate in the Homeless World Cup. Selections and training are in full progress and the number of homeless soccer enthusiasts is still growing. To really get things going we organised our own small “Homeless Antwerp Cup”. More than 30 players turned up and they must have had the time of their lives, because about 20 of them came to the following training. We hope that they will hang in there. The most important criterium for selection is motivation, not soccer skill. Our players come from diverse backgrounds. Some live in shelters, some are squatters, others literally live on the streets… But they all have at least two things in common; they all love soccer and they all are very eager to come to Melbourne. This year the Belgian players will all come from the city of Antwerp, but we hope that this could be the start of a nation wide homeless competition.
