Welsh Dragons 2009 - Update

Posted by Wales - 08/07/2009

The Welsh team has now been selected (which really wasn’t easy!) and preparations are well under way. We have had 4 training sessions, which are going very well. The team is training harder than any team before and Lee and I are excited about working with them over the next couple of months. The players themselves are also very excited although I'm not sure they are fully aware of what they had let themselves in for...

The squad for the Homeless World Cup is:

1. Gareth Jones - Cardiff YMCA - Cardiff 2. Jason Moles - Huggy Bears - Cardiff 3. Dean Hobbs - Huggy Bears - Cardiff 4. Sean Williams - Gofal Rangers - Swansea 5. John Sutton - Cyrenians Snipers - Swansea 6. Dai John - CJIT STARS - Swansea 7. Billy Blanks - Solas Dragons - Pontypool 8. Chris Stockwell - Solas Dragons - Newport

The team has been selected in line with the ethos behind Street Football Wales and the beliefs of the Homeless World Cup and I am confident that they will do a great job of representing Wales, homelessness, SFW and themselves in a good light.

As you know, SFW relies totally on raising funds to enable us to continue running matchdays and to attend tournaments with the Welsh team. Starting on Monday 6th July there will be a poster/advert running in the Big Issue Cymru asking for financial support.

Finally on this, I would like to thank everyone for all your encouragement, support and interest in this years Homeless World Cup Team so far and would hope that this continues. Lets encourage everyone to get behind the team and show their support to help make this the best prepared Welsh homeless team to attend a tournament and represent us all!

The Welsh Dragons played their first friendlies today at the Street Football Wales league - versus Cyrenian Snipers, Fechan Dodgers, Huggy Bears and Cardiff YMCA and have made a fanstatic start in their preperations for Milan by winning all four. Some very good football was played and over the four games they scored a total of 20 goals and conceded only 5.

The team has a long way to go with lots of hard work ahead of them, but what a promising start! Well done boys - keep up the good work!

Not a bad performance from the dragons, but your next match day how about playing against a select team from all the players, not just organisations,
