Brazil fielded two women in their outfield line-up and after a few minutes of wayward shooting found themselves one up against a lively Zambian side. Tit-for tat exchanges saw Brazil 2-1 ahead before Zambian came to life to score three and go in 4-2 ahead at half time.
A Brazilian penalty reduced the deficit on the restart and their keeper, barring one howler when he let the ball slip away from him earlier at the cost of a goal, was repelling most Zambian advances with a string of fine saves. With two minutes left Brazil had dragged themselves level fro 3-5 down only to allow Zambia's Manda Phirl to score a beauty from the half-way line and then shatter Brazilian dreams with two more to complete his hat-trick.
