Ukraine v Kazakhstan
Ukraine (4) v Kazakhstan (5)
Possibly the first match to use video evidence. At the end of a long day of competition, in this penultimate match on Pitch 2, the scoreboard is reading 4 - 4 but the Kazakhstan team are making a very, very strong case that they have won the match 5 - 4.
Ukraine protest fairly that the scoreboard reads 4 -4. Each team has a case and they are making it to the scorers. Both teams have fought a close match and this result really matters.South African referee Shoes Mahono steps in and maintains calm amid the confusion. Even though it is not his job to keep the score, he is prepared to review the entire video tape of the match on the professional camera, making sure that each coach understands and accepts the result.
There is no time to review the entire match on the pitch, where players and coaches are clustering around the camera. The next and final match must start.
Mahono takes the camera away to the referees tent to review the tape with a second referee's opinion. The final match has almost finished by the time the referee returns.
Kazakhstan are all waiting to the side of the pitch. Ukraine have disappeared. The result is declared 5 - 4, in Kazakhstan's favour, and they are absolutely delighted.
A pity that it had to end like this, for a match that was so close, in which Ukraine worked so hard to close down skillful opposition - no space or quarter given, a real demonstration of closing down, forcing Kazakhstan to produce their best.
But in the end, it was a fantastic piece of refereeing to patiently review the tape, in what must be one of the most testing situations yet for a referee at this tournament.
