The Homeless World Cup Finals Day

RUSSIA V KAZAKHSTAN

Saturday 30th September, 5.30pm

29 September 2006, The Final of the 4th Homeless World Cup, the international street soccer tournament changing lives, will take place at the Grand Parade in Cape Town on 30th September 2006 at 5.30pm. 

Russia will take on Kazakhstan after 48 teams battled their way through the week of group stages to stand a chance lift the Homeless World Cup aloft for their country. In the semi-finals Russia beat Mexico 5 goals to nil and Kazakhstan beat Poland 3 goals to 1. 

Mel Young, Co-founder and President, The Homeless World Cup said: “The Homeless World Cup in Cape Town 2006 has given the opportunity to 500 players to stand proud, to be united with fellow players from all over the, and to take the courage to represent their country and change their lives forever.  Cape Town has been fantastic in welcoming these players to the city, thank you, and we wish all players, all nations great success on finals day.”

Finals Day is Trophy Day at the Homeless World Cup where all teams play for their final Homeless World Cup rankings and a series of Trophies: 

The Homeless World Cup

The Premier’s Cup

The City of Edinburgh Cup

The City of Cape Town Cup

The Big Issue Cape Town Cup

The INSP Trophy

Trophies will also be awarded for the Best Fair Play Team, the Best Mixed Team, Best Female Player, Best male Player, Best Goalkeeper and Best Newcomer. Each player will be presented with a medal. 

The final will be broadcast live by SABC Sport on SABC1 at 5.30 – 5.50pm.

500 players with the courage to take this once in a life time opportunity to play for their country and change their lives forever have been setting Cape Town and the rest of the world a light this week, blazing a trail in South Africa for the 2010 World Cup.
