Scotland v Denmark

Scotland (7) v (3) Denmark

As Russ Abbot once sang: What an Atmosphere! The people of Copenhagen have embraced their HWC team and Pitch 1 was full to the rafters with excited supporters for this clash with an impressive Scotland. The question was whether home support could lift the Danes to beat their highly fancied opponents.

But not even the appearance of some unfamiliar sunshine could dent the relentless progress of the Scots, who started off the first half by trying their best to quell the enthusiasm of the Town Hall Square crowd. Four quick goals from the clinical Caledonians threatened to keep the noise levels down, but a superb Danish fightback - including a couple for the sweet left foot of Bell and a well-worked free kick saw the grandstands wobble under the weight of a thousand stamping feet.

Praise is due to the Scottish commentator who kept his natural bias at bay for the duration, but his compatriots didn't need his help as first Brodie extended the lead to 5-3 and then some hallmark defensive punts deep into the crowd frustrated Denmark's rhythm. Cries of 'hold it!' from the Scottish bench made clear their intentions for the rest of the game and with another goal giving a three-goal cushion the game drifted towards a close. There was still time left for one more strike from both teams to give the wonderful supporters an extra chance to exercise their lungs - and dampen the Danes' disappointment a little.
