Paraguay (7) v (3) Australia

A YOUNG Paraguay side has accounted for Australia 7-3, in a placing match for the 2008 Women’s Homeless World Cup.

Despite both teams being out of contention for the cup itself, the match maintained a high pace throughout. Neither team backed down from tackles or shots.

Paraguay opened the scoring in the second minute of the match after the Australian goalkeeper, Miki Kobyashi, passed the ball straight to Nidia Dominguez, who was able to finish easily.

Within a minute though, the Australians had struck back with a penalty after the Paraguayan goalkeeper had handled the ball outside her goal area.

From then on the Paraguayans were able to take control of the match, scoring six unanswered goals that deflated the Australians’ confidence and chances of progressing to the final to decide fifth place in the competition.

Showing a never-say-die attitude, the Australians fought hard to score a consolation goal late in the match after a turnover was pounced upon and deftly turned into the Paraguayans’ goal.
