Otis, Malawi 2008

Otis admits the most challenging thing about being homeless is that you feel you are not a human being. Ten years ago, Otis became homeless after having a disagreement with his parents. He was only 17 when he first starting begging to survive. “I was sleeping under a bridge with my fellow friends,” said Otis.

Now having the chance to wear the team jersey for Malawi at the Melbourne 2008 Homeless World Cup, he says it’s like a dream come true. Though Otis has difficulty with his left knee, it doesn’t stop him from getting out on the field. Otis is fast and an excellent dribbler, just like his football hero Lawrence Waya of the Malawi Silver Strikers.

Through his mentors at training, Otis is taking advice and is sorting out differences with his parents, he wants to be a role model for his fellow homeless people.

He dreams of one day playing in Europe, but first he wants Milawi to be champions at the Melbourne 2008 Homeless World Cup.
