THE Netherlands beat Cambodia 13-2 in front of an enthusiastic crowd today at Federation Square.
During a break-neck and pulsating first half, the Dutch scored in clusters, demoralising a spirited Cambodian team. Quick passing and the precise finishing from Dutch player Korstam allowed the Netherlands to build an early 5-0 lead.
The Dutch players were quick to impose their physical advantage, but were met by stout Cambodian defending.
Unbowed, Cambodia rallied and broke their duck towards the end of the half, raising their vocal support.
The Netherlands responded by bringing on Koster to bolster their attack, but he his attempts were foiled by a fine double save from the Cambodian goalkeeper.
Two more back-to-back goals meant a half time score of 7-1 to the Netherlands.
During the second half, more space became available, allowing both sides to display a more expansive pass and move game. The Netherlands extended their lead but Cambodia soon replied, squeezing the ball home from the most impossible of angles.
As the clock ran down the Dutch brought on Kriek, who scored with almost his first touch. Cambodia had the opportunity to equalise, but a fantastic penalty save by the Dutch keeper denied them.
During the final minutes the Netherlands settled into a flowing passing rhythm and created numerous chances, several of which were snaffled up by the ubiquitous Korstam.
In the end the Netherlands enjoyed a 13-2 win.
