GREECE has moved to the top of Group H with a clinical 14-1 victory over Sweden.
The Greeks put their foot on the pedal from the outset, scoring nine unanswered goals in the first half as the Swedes struggled to get the ball out of their half.
The star of the first half was Fotios Lazarou who scored five goals in five minutes before being substituted. By that time the Greek lead was eight goals, so the coach gave Lazarou the rest of the match off.
His speed and strength on the ball was on display for his second goal, when he dribbled clear of the defender before working a one-two with teammate Vasileios Bourgazas and firing it into the bottom corner.
It was the second heavy defeat for the Swedes today on Melbourne Pitch – they lost to the Philippines 13-3 earlier – and they struggled to muster a fight in the second half.
The Greeks slowed the play as the sun beat down, but one of their support staff had the energy to rush the field to celebrate Bashirollah Safi's score from a penalty. Safi quickly added a second and the rout was nearly complete.
The icing on the cake came from Bourgazas, who delivered the final goal with a powerful strike from the right-hand side.
