GERMANY thrashed Austria 10-2 after an aggressive match on Melbourne pitch on Thursday afternoon.

Both sides were determined to net an early goal, but wasted opportunities with strong kicks sailing over the cross bar.

Austria scored the first goal with a shoelace kick down the centre by Serkan Yavus - known as 'Sergio' by his teammates.

But Austria lost focus – losing several one-on-one battles.

A chip over the German goalkeeper promised a second goal but it miraculously rebounded off the post, with Germany stealing possession.

This set a precedent for the rest of the match as Austria tried to keep pace with the German side.

Austria's weak marking in defence allowed Germany's Patrick Helliger to net nine goals throughout the match.

Helliger’s strong positioning around the penalty area limited the Austrian goalkeeper's options, causing further mistakes in defence.

The 10-2 result keeps Germany in the top three in group G.
