Sunday, November 23

  • Human Rights Arts and Film Festival Closing Night: 7.30pm, Capitol Cinemas, 113 Swanston St, Melbourne (opposite Town Hall) Screening of Kicking It, the Homeless World Cup documentary directed by Susan Koch and narrated by Colin Farrell. Fundraiser for The Big Issue, plus speech and interviews with Street Socceroos coach George Halkias and players Alex Marshall and Stevie Maloney.

Sunday, November 30

  • Welcome Function for teams and official Competition Draw.

Monday, December 1

  • Homeless World Cup Street Parade 12.15 – 1pm, Starts at the corner of Exhibition and Collins Streets and then turns left down Swanston St, ending at Federation Square. The streets of Melbourne’s centre will be a sea of colour and excitement as 56 teams proudly carry their flags and display their spirit and passion for the tournament that changes lives.

  • Opening Ceremony 1-1.45pm, Federation Square Stadium. The official opening of the Melbourne 2008 Homeless World Cup with speakers the Premier of Victoria, Mr John Brumby, founder and president, Homeless World Cup, Mel Young, and Australian Street Soccer Advisory Group chairman, Terry Campbell. Also featuring live music and dance. As a symbol of peace, 56 trees will be passed out, each representing one of the 56 teams.

  • Opening Match – Team Australia 2.15pm kick off, Federation Square Stadium, Australia v. TBA (to be decided at the match draw) Homeless World Cup matches 2.15-6.15pm. Check daily match schedule for details. Federation Square Stadium, Melbourne and Yarra pitches, Birrarung Marr.

  • Homeless Not Artless 6.45pm, ACMI, Federation Square. Performance of readings, spoken word, song and film by Big Issue vendors and friends.This is a ticketed event. To attend, reserve a ticket through ACMI Cinemas here.

Tuesday, December 2

Wednesday, December 3

  • 11am - 6pm: Matches on Fed Square, Melbourne and Yarra pitches.

  • Melbourne Conversations – Schools Sessions 11am – 12pm, BMW Edge, Federation Square. A discussion by school groups about street soccer, crime, homelessness, poverty and achievement, and how young people can make a difference in the world. Panellists include: Dan Adams – Make Poverty History and The Oaktree Foundation (age 21 years) Sarah McLardy – Yr 11 student, Reach Ambassador, Board Member of the Mali Initiative (age 17 years) Emmanuel Bismyf– Child soldier from Sierra Leone, former Australian Street Socceroo and Reach Ambassador (age 19 years) Tom Hurley – Yr 10 student who volunteers to teach young African children English (age 16 years) Moderator: Tracee Hutchison – Broadcaster, Journalist and Presenter – The Age, ABC Radio & TV

Thursday, December 4

  • 11am - 7.15pm: Matches on Fed Square, Melbourne and Yarra pitches.

Friday, December 5

  • Women’s Win Presentation 11am – 12 noon, BMW Edge, Federation Square, 8 Women’s Homeless World Cup teams will present their ideas for their grass roots football project in their country. All the women’s players will vote for the best idea; with the winning nation presented with the Women Win Award (5,000 Euros).

  • Melbourne Conversations - Women Kicking Goals 12.30 – 1.30pm, BMW Edge, Federation Square. Committed women from Australian and overseas share their stories, experiences, visions and skills related to the concerns of poverty and social disadvantage. Panellists include: Cindy Coltman, executive Director, Women Win, Jan Owen AM – executive director Social Ventures Australia, Moira Rayner – former EO Commissioner, Moderator - Tracee Hutchison – broadcaster, presenter and journalist

  • Film night at Federation Square – Kicking It 8pm, Federation Square superscreen, The Homeless World Cup documentary, Kicking It, directed by Susan Koch and narrated by Colin Farrell will be shown on the big screen at Fed Square.

Saturday, December 6: 

  • Homeless World Cup matches. 12-6pm. Check daily match schedule for details. Federation Square Stadium, Melbourne and Yarra pitches, Birrarung Marr

  • Film night at Federation Square – La Otra Copa 8pm, Federation Square superscreen

  • Parkour demonstrations by Trace Elements, at Birrarung Marr


Sunday 7 December

  • Final Match Day 10am-1.40pm Federation Square Stadium, Melbourne and Yarra pitches, Birrarung Marr. The final matches of the tournament see 56 national teams play out for their final world ranking position at the Melbourne 2008 Homeless World Cup

  • Cup Finals From 1.50pm, Federation Square Stadium

  • Women’s Homeless World Cup Final 4.40pm, Federation Square Stadium

  • Homeless World Cup Final 5.15pm, Federation Square Stadium

  • Trophy Presentations 3.55 - 4.20pm, Federation Square Stadium. Five Trophy presentations are made for: The Dignitary Cup, The City Cup, Melbourne, The Host Cup, The Big Issue, The Community Cup, The INSP Networking Trophy, Homeless World Cup Trophy presentation and Closing Ceremony

  • Women’s Homeless World Cup Trophy and Homeless World Cup Trophy presentation 5.40pm, Federation Square stadium. Official closing of the Melbourne 2008 Homeless World Cup begins. Speakers include government representatives and Mel Young, founder and president, Homeless World Cup and the official handover to the Milan 2009 Homeless World Cup will be made.
