England (6) v (5) Ukraine
By George ThomsonENGLAND edged out Ukraine 6-5 in a thrilling encounter between the top two teams in Group A.
With a large English crowd balanced by an unsurprisingly pro-Ukraine Australian contingent, the atmosphere at Fed Square demanded a fast and furious game. Such an encounter suited both teams, with England's pace matched by Ukraine's physicality.
England, second place in the group prior to the match, appeared set for the game. Captain Ryan Nash led from the front, firing in the opening goal from the half-way line. Both teams then traded goals until the break, Ukraine's invariably curled finishes from the cultured boot of Nikitin.
All square after the break, England regained the lead through goal poacher Dominic Holver.
Disaster followed, as Gaal was shown a blue card for fouling two reckless fouls within just a few seconds. Realising they had their backs to the wall while down to three men, England upped their work-rate admirably.
Ukraine are far too savvy to let such opportunities slip however, and Igor Flissak's cool side-footed finish drew them equal.
Restored to a full team, England clearly sensed Ukraine hadn't done enough to finish the game. Captain Nash fired home an unstoppable shot from deep within his own half, and then led the frantic defending as England saw the game out 6-5.
The result means both teams will qualify for the Homeless World Cup play-off.
The importance of the result was not lost on the English, who looked visibly boosted by their win. Ukraine were admirable in defeat however, and the teams locked arms to salute a grateful crowd.
