THE energy and support from the home crowd was not enough to push the Australian women’s team over the line today, as they lost to Columbia 7-1.
After the teams went back and forth at the beginning of the game, Columbia’s forward got the game going with a powerful goal. The Australians tried to keep up, but everywhere the Australians kicked the ball, the Columbian goalie was there too.
After taking a heavy fall, Columbia’s forward recovered quickly to take another goal.
Australian player Tanya put in a great effort, fiercely breaking through the pack to take Australia’s first and only goal.
At half time the scores were 3-1 in favour of Columbia.
Columbia scored a goal in the first ten seconds of the second half, and managed to follow it up with another goal in quick succession.
The second half left the Columbian goal keeper with not much to do, although Australia’s forwards put in a vicious performance until the end of the game.
A mention must go to the Australian goalkeeper Miki Kobayashi who faced the intensity of the Columbian’s formidable attack. Kobayashi did not lose her determination throughout the match and managed to keep the smile on her face despite taking a close range football to the face.
