Nike athlete unveils Homeless World Cup Cape Town logo

The new Homeless World Cup Cape Town 2006 Logo was unveiled at a star-studded gala by Nike athlete Mark Williams on Saturday  - 29 July - that took place at the Arabella Sheraton in Cape Town.

The evening saw over 400 people, including Western Cape premier, Ebrahim Rasool, soccer stars Lucas Radebe and Mark Fish and former Springbok, Robbie Fleck present for a line up of top entertainment and an auction of sports memorabilia to raise funds for the 2006 tournament and the announcement of the South African national squad for the Homeless World Cup Cape Town 2006.

At the unveiling of the new logo Mel Young, co-founder and president of the Homeless World Cup, said:  "The launch of the new Homeless World Cup global identity and the Cape Town 2006 logo will support our ambitious vision and goals to end homelessness. In Cape Town this year we will see the Homeless World Cup double in size as 48 nations unite at the Grand Parade with one goal: To kick off poverty.  And each player comes with their own goal, their own reason to stand proud - 77% of players change their lives after a Homeless World Cup, an outstanding performance."

"We are honoured to be bringing the Homeless World Cup to Africa for the first time. The spirit of this country and its people is amazing and I know that South Africa will show the eyes of world what a special nation this is pre-2010.

"This is the chance for South Africa's business community to get involved and support this exciting annual sports event, unite and send out a positive message to the rest of the world.  We need your support to make this happen to change more lives."

Managing director of The Big Issue South Africa, Richard Ishmail, commented: "It is a huge privilege to be the hosts of this international sporting event. With the endorsement of Danny Jordaan and the 2010 Local Organising Committee, we are giving the Homeless World Cup a larger context and bigger goalposts for its participants".

With only nine weeks until the main event on the Grand Parade, the Gala event and the unveiling of the new Homeless World Cup logo began the countdown to what is expected to be a phenomenal tournament here in Cape Town.
